Revise: Cyrus the Great's Background and AccessionTo the north lay Media, ruled by Astyages from his capital at Ecbatana. Cambyses I, and initially Cyrus, owed allegiance to Astyages. Astyages was therefore their overlord: they could be kings locally while remaining subordinate to him.
