Revise: Land, tribute and elitesSome farmers, known as mayeque, had no land of their own and worked on these estates, paying part of their harvest to their overlords. Such payments supplied nobles with resources without requiring them to carry out the farming themselves. Control of land was consequently an important foundation of elite wealth and status.
