Huey Tlatoani

The Council of Four selected the emperor, or Huey Tlatoani, from the nobility. Once chosen, the emperor stood far above other members of society: even high-ranking nobles were expected to lie face down in his presence. Under Moctezuma II, this elevated position expressed the authority of the imperial ruler.
