Revise: The Whitechapel Environment: Living Conditions and MigrationPeople unable to afford a permanent home could pay for a bed in a lodging house, sometimes called a ‘doss house’. Whitechapel had over 200 lodging houses, and roughly a quarter of its population lived in them. Flower and Dean Street was particularly associated with this accommodation.
