Casual ward

The casual ward provided especially basic, short-term accommodation for homeless people. It offered an alternative to sleeping outside, but its harsh conditions made it something many people wished to avoid. Workhouses therefore helped people survive without resolving the causes of poverty, such as low pay and irregular employment.
