Definition

A council body responsible for organising education locally. The 1902 Education Act transferred responsibility from School Boards to these authorities.

The 1902 Education Act reorganised this system. It abolished School Boards and transferred responsibility to county and borough councils acting as Local Education Authorities, or LEAs. These authorities could develop elementary education and establish secondary and technical schools.
