Revise: IrelandIrish nationalists challenged this view. Earlier conquest and the transfer of land to English and Scottish settlers helped sustain the belief that Ireland was a conquered nation entitled to govern itself. Religious differences also mattered: most Irish people were Catholic, whereas Protestant Unionism was particularly strong in Ulster, in the north.
