The process through which immigrants became part of the society where they settled, for example through work, marriage and participation in local life. Integration did not necessarily mean equal legal rights.

Paper 3
A society in which people of different racial backgrounds participate together with equal rights, rather than being separated by race.
Revise: Malcolm X and Black PowerMartin Luther King supported integration and nonviolent protest. Malcolm X and the later Black Power movement placed greater emphasis on black independence, pride and control over communities.
Paper 2
The process through which newcomers become part of a society, for example by developing shared customs, institutions and relationships.
Revise: Migration Before 1066 and the Norman ConquestIntegration was helped by similarities between the communities. Old English and Scandinavian languages were related, making communication easier. Both societies also understood kingship, loyalty to leaders and distinctions between different social ranks.
Support explanations of integration with specific evidence, such as Guthrum’s baptism, intermarriage or the mixed place-name ‘Grimston’.
Assess integration in several ways: employment, marriage, legal rights and acceptance. Success in one area did not guarantee equality or safety.
