Revise: The Aftermath of the First Punic WarThe indemnity placed a heavy burden on a state already exhausted by war. Releasing prisoners without ransom also denied Carthage the payments it might otherwise have demanded. Meanwhile, the protection given to Rome’s allies restricted Carthage’s freedom to act in Sicily: it could not simply resume attacks to recover its former position.
