Revise: Prevention of DiseasePeople did not yet understand that microorganisms caused diseases, but they had noticed an important pattern: someone who survived smallpox did not normally catch it again. This protection, or immunity, suggested that deliberately causing a less dangerous infection might prevent a later, deadly one.
