Iatrochemistry also encouraged the preparation of chemical remedies. These developments increased the range of treatments available without necessarily providing a reliable explanation of disease.

One change was the growth of iatrochemistry, which used metals and minerals as medicines. Antimony, for example, was used to make patients sweat or vomit, but could poison them. Mercury and guaiac wood were tried against syphilis.
