The title used by the ruler of the Persian Empire; Bessus claimed it after Darius III’s death.

Darius III, the Persian Great King, was still alive and could remain a focus for resistance. Capturing him therefore mattered politically as well as militarily: defeating an army was not the same as removing a rival ruler.
