Portraits presented Elizabeth as beautiful, pure, powerful and increasingly ageless. Their purpose was not simply to record her appearance. They promoted an ideal queen, helping sustain the image of Gloriana, the glorious ruler associated with Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene.
