Gas and water socialism

In Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain promoted ‘gas and water socialism’. The council took over gas and water companies, aiming to improve supplies and use profits for public improvements. By 1879, the council had made a profit of £165,000; by 1884, gas prices had fallen by 30%.
