Paper 3
Revise: End of the RevolutionMao suppressed the Red Guards’ mass movement in 1968, but struggles over China’s political direction continued until his death and the arrest of the Gang of Four in 1976.
Paper 1
Four influential Communist politicians associated with the Cultural Revolution: Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and Wang Hongwen.
Revise: Political Transition: Opposition, Repression and PropagandaOne powerful group was the Gang of Four: Mao’s wife Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and Wang Hongwen. They had risen to prominence during the Cultural Revolution of 1966–1976 and had dominated Chinese politics in the early 1970s. Their influence therefore connected them closely with a period of political persecution and upheaval.
Link the Gang of Four’s fall to Mao’s death, Hua Guofeng’s actions and military support—not simply to their unpopularity.
Distinguish the defeat of rivals within the Communist leadership, such as the Gang of Four, from the suppression of public criticism at Democracy Wall.
