Foundation myth

Rome’s traditional foundation date was 753 BC. Its foundation myths explained more than when a city began: they gave Romans an ancestry, connected their community to the gods and explained the origins of political institutions. These are legendary accounts, not eyewitness records of the eighth century BC.
