A hospital established or supported through a gift of money or property intended to finance its work.

Wealthy donors financed endowed hospitals, giving money to establish institutions and support their work. Thomas Guy, a wealthy printer and bookseller, financed Guy’s Hospital, established in 1724. Other examples included Westminster Hospital, Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, and the Royal Infirmaries in Edinburgh and Manchester.
