Paper 3
A recipient of an encomienda, entitled to receive tribute from the Indigenous community assigned to them.
Revise: Nature and impact of Spanish ruleUnder this system, an Indigenous community was assigned to an individual called an encomendero, who gained the right to receive its tribute. This could include compulsory labour as well as goods. Instead of receiving only a one-off reward for fighting, conquistadors gained a continuing source of wealth.
Distinguish a viceroy, who represented royal government, from an encomendero, who held rights to Indigenous tribute and labour.
In a narrative account, connect events rather than simply listing them: restrictions threatened encomenderos’ interests, provoking rebellion and a royal response.
