Revise: LandBombay formed part of the Portuguese dowry settlement agreed in 1661 for Charles II’s marriage to Catherine of Braganza. Its transfer to the English Crown therefore arose from a royal marriage agreement, rather than an East India Company conquest. English occupation followed in 1665.

Alexander gave dowries to the bridegrooms. He also gave wedding gifts to over 10,000 Macedonians who had already married Asian women. These were existing marriages, not another 10,000 weddings performed in the elite ceremony.
