The political campaign launched by Mao Zedong in China in 1966 to renew revolutionary communism and attack alleged opponents within the Communist Party and society. The period is conventionally dated 1966–76.
Revise: Reasons for RevolutionMao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966, although China was already governed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He argued that winning political power had not permanently defeated capitalism: old beliefs and self-interested behaviour could survive, even inside the Party. Renewed revolution, he believed, was needed to keep China communist.
