Paper 1
Paid officers based at Bow Street in London who investigated crimes and pursued suspects during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Revise: The police forceIn the mid-eighteenth century, Henry Fielding, a London magistrate based at Bow Street, organised paid officers to investigate crimes and catch criminals. These officers became known as the Bow Street Runners. His half-brother John continued their development, taking charge in 1754.
For a feature of law enforcement, give a specific fact and a supporting detail: the Bow Street Runners pursued criminals and recovered stolen property.
Do not describe the Bow Street Runners as a nationwide police force or the CID as a separate force: the CID belonged to the Metropolitan Police.
