Regular patrols aimed to prevent crime through a visible police presence, rather than relying only on catching offenders afterwards. Officers became known as ‘Peelers’ or ‘Bobbies’ after Peel.

London was divided into policing areas, and constables patrolled allocated beats. A visible officer regularly walking the same streets could discourage offences, respond to trouble and become familiar with the area. Prevention was therefore central to the new force, alongside catching offenders.
