Revise: Aftermath of the Civil WarSouthern governments introduced Black Codes. Some required African Americans to sign yearly labour contracts; unemployed Black people could be treated as vagrants and hired out to white landowners. These measures did not formally restore slavery, but they restricted freedom and attempted to preserve plantation discipline.
