Revise: Aldershot Garrison, 1854 to PresentBefore 1854, soldiers in Britain were spread between regimental depots, garrison towns and civilian billets. Some occupied old castles and forts; others lived in private houses. This scattered arrangement made it difficult to bring a sizeable formation together for training.
