A monumental inscription commissioned by Darius I that presents his account of gaining the Persian throne and defeating rebellions.
Revise: Cambyses II: The Conquest of Egypt and DeathHerodotus and Darius’ Behistun Inscription both claim that Cambyses had secretly killed his brother, known as Smerdis or Bardiya. While Cambyses was away in Egypt, a man then claimed the throne as that brother. Darius identifies this claimant as Gaumata, a Magian whom he portrays as an impostor.
