Revise: Policing, Crime and Social Tensions in WhitechapelThe beat constable’s regular presence was intended to discourage offences and allow him to spot trouble quickly. He needed to know the streets, alleys, shops and pubs on his route, as well as the people who used them.
For a ‘Describe one feature’ answer, identify a feature and add a specific supporting detail: a beat constable patrolled a fixed area and reported to his sergeant at agreed times and places.
Distinguish crime prevention by uniformed patrols from crime detection by detectives. The creation of CID did not remove the need for beat constables.
