During the Crimean War, 1853–1856, Nightingale was invited to lead the nursing staff at the Scutari Army Barracks. Her work involved establishing nurses and auxiliaries in a military setting and challenging the belief that ordinary soldiers did not deserve proper medical attention and comfort.
