Revise: Situation on AccessionFrance’s longstanding alliance with Scotland, the Auld Alliance, created a danger on two sides: France lay across the Channel, while independent Scotland bordered England to the north. The Scottish border was difficult to defend. Mary of Guise, who governed Scotland on behalf of her daughter Mary, Queen of Scots, kept French troops there.
