Abdication

On 9 November 1918, Chancellor Max von Baden announced Wilhelm II’s abdication without the Kaiser’s consent. Wilhelm fled to the Netherlands on 10 November. The monarchy had ended.

The immediate chain was therefore hardship and strikes → mass demonstrations → army mutiny → political and military isolation → abdication. Food shortages helped bring people onto the streets, but the loss of armed support turned unrest into the collapse of the monarchy.
