Subsistence agriculture

Subsistence agriculture provides food mainly for the farmer’s household. One method is slash-and-burn cultivation: vegetation is cut and burnt to clear a plot, and the ash initially adds nutrients to the soil. Fires used for clearance can spread beyond the intended area.
