Paper 1
Revise: Causes and Measurement of Earthquake HazardsThe rocks slip suddenly and release energy as seismic waves, which travel through the Earth and make the ground shake.
Specification 1.2a · Paper 1, Paper 3
Waves of energy released by an earthquake that travel through the Earth and cause shaking.
Revise: Tectonic Plate Movement: EarthquakesStored energy is released as seismic waves. These travel outwards through the Earth and make the ground shake. The earthquake is therefore caused by sudden movement along a fault, not simply by plates moving slowly.
Explain earthquake formation as a linked sequence: plate movement → stress builds while a fault is locked → sudden slip → energy released as seismic waves.
For an explanation, link plate movement to friction, stress building up, sudden fault movement and the release of seismic waves.
