Revise: Trends in Global Food Consumption and AvailabilityDefra uses the production-to-supply ratio as a broad measure of self-sufficiency. It compares the farmgate value of UK raw food production with the value of raw food available for human consumption. Because it is a value-based measure that includes the effects of trade, it is not simply the percentage of food on people's plates that was grown in the UK.
Check what the statistic measures: food purchased is not necessarily food eaten, and a production-to-supply ratio is not the same as the domestic share of food consumed.
