Oxbow lake

Flow into the old loop becomes slower, encouraging deposition at its entrance and exit. These deposits eventually seal the loop off from the main channel, leaving a curved oxbow lake.

Deposition then blocks the entrances to the abandoned loop, isolating it as an oxbow lake.
