Revise: Human Intervention and GISDifferent kinds of information can be displayed as layers, allowing you to examine their relationships. For a reservoir investigation, useful layers could include water extent at two dates, roads, settlements and land cover. Overlaying them means displaying them together in the same geographical position.

A separate set of geographical information displayed in a GIS, such as roads, population or flood risk.
When comparing maps or GIS layers, check their dates, coverage and level of detail.
Distinguish a mapped association from a proven cause: overlapping layers can suggest an explanation without confirming it.
Check the key, units, dates and visible layers before comparing data. An area outside a mapped risk zone is not necessarily risk-free.

A GIS map is organised into layers, each showing a different set of information. A base map provides geographical context. Other layers might show rivers, roads, housing or areas at risk of flooding.
