The north-east and south-east trade winds meet at the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Convergence means that air flows together; this forces air upwards and encourages clusters of thunderstorms. These clusters can provide the starting disturbance for a tropical cyclone, but most do not develop into one.
