Revise: Health Care Issues in sub-Saharan AfricaHIV attacks the immune system. Without effective treatment, it can lead to AIDS, when the body's ability to fight infections is severely weakened. HIV has no cure, but antiretroviral drugs, often called ARVs, can control the infection.
HIV is not genetically inherited. A baby can acquire the infection through mother-to-child transmission.
If asked for causes of infant mortality other than HIV/AIDS, use relevant causes such as malaria, malnutrition, unsafe water or inadequate maternity care.
