GCSE Geography · key term
A focused geographical question that an investigation seeks to answer using evidence.
Used by AQA and Edexcel
Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
The main question that an investigation aims to answer.
Revise: The Geographical Enquiry ProcessAn enquiry question asks what you want to find out. A hypothesis states a prediction that evidence can test. For the illustrative river investigation, a possible hypothesis is: “Channel width and depth differ between the upstream and downstream survey sites.”
Specification 7A, 7B · Paper 3
Revise: Formulating Enquiry Questions for River FieldworkAn enquiry question gives the investigation a clear direction. ‘Rivers’ is a topic, but ‘How does channel width change with distance downstream?’ is a question that fieldwork can help answer. It identifies both the characteristic being investigated—width—and the comparison to make—different positions downstream.
A focused geographical question that an investigation gathers and analyses evidence to answer.
Paper 2
A geographical question that can be answered by collecting and analysing evidence.
Revise: Fieldwork and Quantitative Skills in Coastal GeographyA useful enquiry question narrows the investigation to a particular place and a measurable difference or relationship.
A focused geographical question that guides an investigation, from choosing data to drawing and evaluating a conclusion.

A focused geographical question that guides an investigation and is answered by analysing evidence.
Make an enquiry question specific enough to answer: identify the geographical feature or process, the location and what you will investigate.
When explaining your own fieldwork, state your actual enquiry question or hypothesis and identify the river or reach investigated.
Make an enquiry question specific to your location and something you can investigate, rather than simply naming a topic such as ‘coastal erosion’.
