The numbered vertical grid lines are eastings: their values increase towards the east. The numbered horizontal lines are northings: their values increase towards the north.

Revise: Fundamental OS Map Skills: Scale, Coordinates and ReliefThe numbered vertical lines are eastings: their values increase as you move east across the map. The numbered horizontal lines are northings: their values increase as you move north up the map.
Write grid references with eastings first, then northings, and without commas. Use the grid lines to the left of and below the feature.
Give eastings before northings. For a four-figure reference, use the lines forming the square’s left and bottom edges.
