Revise: Physical Processes Shaping LandscapesPast cold conditions also explain some dry valleys in permeable rocks, particularly chalk landscapes such as Sussex. Permeable rock normally allows water to pass through it. During colder periods, frozen ground prevented water from draining downwards, so water flowed across the surface and eroded valleys.

Do not assume every lowland was glaciated or every dry valley formed in the same way. The frozen-ground explanation applies particularly to valleys in permeable rocks such as chalk.
