Revise: What makes a film independent? In ‘What Makes a Film Independent?’, adapted from Studying American Independent Cinema (2011), Rona Murray argues that industrial factors matter, but cannot provide the whole definition. Independent cinema can also be understood as filmmaking that ‘strays artistically from the norm’. Its independence may appear in how it uses genre, tells its story, combines images and sounds, or presents a particular viewpoint.
