Here, “virtue” means effective power. Transcendental medicine reaches beyond ordinary material explanation towards the relationship between body and spirit.

Before transforming, Hyde attacks Lanyon’s “narrow and material views” and his rejection of “transcendental medicine” in Chapter 9. These are the experimenter’s claims, spoken while he is Hyde. His promises of “fame and power” suggest that scientific curiosity can be tempted by ambition as well as a desire for truth.
