Bassanio is a Venetian gentleman, Antonio’s close friend and a suitor to the wealthy Portia. He has spent beyond his means, so he needs financial help to travel to Belmont and compete for her hand. Antonio borrows from Shylock on his behalf, agreeing to a bond that puts Antonio’s life at risk if the loan is not repaid.
