The narrator also states that ‘life is an incessant struggle for existence’ (Book One Chapter 1). ‘Incessant’ makes survival sound continuous and exhausting. The Martians’ invasion becomes an attempt to escape their cooling planet rather than merely an unexplained desire for violence.
