Paper 2
Revise: Gratiano and NerissaTheir relationship forms a comic parallel to Bassanio and Portia's: two men court two women, both couples marry, both wives disguise themselves as men, and both husbands give away rings they promised to keep. The repetition makes questions about love, promises and power visible in more than one relationship. Yet Gratiano's cruelty also shows that a comic character need not be a kind one.
