Ruth’s insecurity does not make her manipulation harmless. In Chapter 16, she uses Kathy’s earlier laughter about Tommy’s drawings against both of them: ‘If Kathy and I have a good laugh about you’. The paired names place Ruth and Kathy together, making Tommy the outsider and suggesting that Kathy shares Ruth’s contempt.
