Lieutenant

Michael Cassio begins Othello as the general’s newly appointed lieutenant, or military deputy. Bianca is his lover, whose affection he accepts but whose place in his public life he limits. Shakespeare connects their personal relationship to the main tragedy: Iago uses Cassio’s friendship with Desdemona, his concern for his career and his dismissive treatment of Bianca to manufacture apparent evidence of adultery.
