Paper 1
A social class of landowners below the peerage who could maintain their position through income from country estates, especially rents.
Revise: ContextThe landed gentry were landowning families who could live on income from their estates, particularly rents paid by tenants. Mr Bennet, who owns Longbourn, and Darcy, who owns Pemberley, belong to this class. Neither needs a title to count as a gentleman, and neither is an ordinary wage-earner.
- Revise: Jane Bennet and Mr Bingley
Landowners of gentlemanly social standing below the nobility; ownership of an estate brought prestige as well as income.
