Iridescence

The ‘veil of iridescence’ in line 5 refers to the shimmering colours of oil on the sand. Something visually beautiful is also poisonous. ‘Veil’ continues the imagery of covering and can suggest mourning dress; the ‘shadow’ in line 6 spreads the darkness onto the sea.
