Paper 1
Revise: Mrs Reed and Mr BrocklehurstMrs Reed is her guardian at Gateshead: her late husband was Jane’s maternal uncle, and she promised him that she would bring Jane up as one of her own children. Brocklehurst is the clergyman who manages Lowood, the charity school to which Mrs Reed sends Jane. Both present their treatment as necessary correction, yet Brontë shows how their authority produces fear, exclusion and suffering.
