Paper 1
Revise: Festivity and melancholyFestivity in Twelfth Night means more than having a party. Music, drinking, jokes and romance offer ways of escaping ordinary restrictions and recovering enjoyment. Festivity means celebration and shared enjoyment; melancholy means sadness or thoughtful gloom. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare repeatedly puts these moods together. The play begins with frustrated love and mourning, moves through noisy celebrations and practical jokes, and ends with reunions and marriage plans—but also resentment and a song about life's hardships.
